Synthpop/industrial artists IAM {X} performed at Nashville’s Basement East Wednesday night to an intimate audience. IAM {X} is on their Mile Deep Hollow Tour 2019 following the release of their eighth album Alive in New Light earlier last year.

Arriving early at The Basement East, you can’t help but feel like you’re backstage at a runway  show for cutting edge burlesque and gothic fashion designers. The crowd profile tends towards the model type clad in heavy dark eyeliner and lipstick, tattoos, short-cut form-fitting clothing and brightly colored side-shaved hairstyles. 30 minutes before the show’s scheduled to start there are already three rows of devoted fans who cling to the stage like a dryer sheet to a freshly laundered bath towel. I sheepishly confess that this is my first IAMX show. I am told to prepare myself. “It’s goth, it’s sexy, and it’s pure love!”

The music and performance is a feast for the senses, fusing elements from synthpop and industrial, electronica and experimental, androgynous and burlesque, theatrical and gothic. The visual art element can be seen in the motion picture projections running in the background throughout the show. The stage lights are busy and mesmerising as they emanate from the back of the stage towards the audience, veiling the band members in darkness. It invokes the vibe of a 90’s industrial concert and commands your focus onstage as your curiosity works to make out the details of the performance.

IAMX members Janine Gezang, Sammi Doll and Jon Siren maintain a frenetic and often maniacal energy throughout the performance. Frontman and IAMX founder Chris Corner’s melodic and wide-ranging vocals deliver evocative lyrics that connect with each member in the audience. Although the stage at The Basement East is not that large, the show feels big, almost like a Las Vegas Rave. Check out IAM {X} next chance you get.
