Dusty Lee and Wanderers finalized their recent EP launch tour in hometown Adelaide on Saturday night. ‘Something For Distraction’ is the new EP for this impressive blues rock trio, Dusty Lee, Benny and Matt.
First forming in 2014, their popularity received a real boost last year when they played the prestigious WOMADelaide festival, which is where I first discovered them. Since then I have sought them out several times. Their first single release, ‘Gaddamn Anything’, was a great introduction for the band, one of those timeless feel-good, rock tracks.
On Saturday night, Wanderers returned to Jive to present the new EP. They were joined on stage by Logan Watt on keys and Ryan Martin John on guitar. Wanderers had previously introduced two tracks from the EP, ‘In your Fire’ and ‘Loco’ as singles. Both received a great response from fans. ‘In Your Fire’ has a real Motown vibe, with Dusty Lee ripping it up on guitar. The keys on this track help replicate the vintage sound. ‘Loco’ has a very cruisey soul vibe, provided particularly by the vocal backing from Benny and Matt. Dusty Lee’s strong voice has an amazing range and his expressive performance style makes his delivery very charismatic.
One of my favourite songs from the new EP is ‘Unsure Emily’, which has a melodic rockabilly feel and gets me dancing every time I hear it. The band has a solid repertoire now and plays a professional set.
Wanderers had two support acts on Saturday night. Firstly Ryan Martin John with his backing band, and also The Winter Gypsy, a six-piece indie folk group, who also hit my radar last year. All bands were well supported on Saturday night by family, friends and plenty of other Adelaide musicians. The crowd was a bit of a ‘who’s who’ of the Adelaide music scene.
Although this current tour is now complete, I believe the band has plans for another tour in July and August promoting more new music. So if you don’t know this band, look out for them. I predict they have a bright future.
