Arts Commons // February 18th 2018
JUNO award-winning, Canadian songstress Serena Ryder, who has released her sixth album UTOPIA, on May 26th, 2017 via Universal Music Canada, performed at The Arts Commons in Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, Alberta along with the opening act by Winnipeg based singer-songwriter Alexa Dirks a.k.a. Begonia. Simply put, it was a show not to be missed.
Begonia has a very powerful voice which commanded the attention of all that were in attendance. Her sound is often compared to two great artists, Amy Winehouse and Adele, but she manages to maintain her own uniquely identifiable mark.
Not only did she give a great performance but she was able to warmly engage and personally interact with the audience. Begonia delivered in spades in this arena with her easy going and humorous demeanour keeping all her fans and newcomers to her music alike entertained in between songs.
Now that I think back on the two performances, Begonia served as the perfect opening act for Sernea Ryder with a sound that was entirely complimentary.
After Begonia completed her set, it was time for the main act to grace the stage. Serena, currently on tour promoting her new album Utopia, stepped on stage of a practically sold out crowd, a spectacle that has now become commonplace with most of the shows she has put on throughout Canada.
Serena represents passionate, high energy music which was delivered from the very first song she performed through to her last. Her charm also shone through as she interacted with the crowd with an easygoing demeanour, full of warmth and humility.
She was kind to her audience and at one point during her performance, she gave away her guitar picks to some of her youngest adoring fans. Her high energy kept everybody dancing and her acoustic songs were equally sublime,
Serena is one of the great Canadian singer-songwriters on the scene at present and an artist that must be seen live!
