Being in the music industry since 1997, there’s not much one can say about jam band Umphrey’s McGee that hasn’t been said before. However, each time they play a show, they manage to bring back the sensation of seeing them for the first time. For three spectacular days, the boys played to a sold-out Tabernacle venue and as usual, didn’t disappoint. Audio-Love magazine was lucky enough to cover the South Bend, Indiana band on the second night of their 3-day extravaganza.
The band divvied up each show into 2 mini-concerts per night. With a devoted fan-base that lined up hours in advance to get a closer look of their heroes, Umphrey's finally hit the stage at 9:15PM for the first set. Elated fans were quick to show the band love by greeting them with a thunderous ovation. The band in turn rifled off renditions of “North Route” and “Similar Skin” to get the crowd swaying on their feet, accompanied by an entrancing light show that put said fans in a daze.
Guitarist Brendan Bayliss took a chance to congratulate the fans of the Atlanta Falcons, as the local team had just won its first playoff game defeating a tough Seattle opponent. Bayliss goes on to state “Enjoy this feeling, it never gets old” in describing the home team win; oddly enough, the phrase suits perfectly the atmosphere created by Bayliss and company.
The second set of tonight’s show only further cemented the party vibe U.M.'s shows are known for. With all members taking turns displaying their musical chops, the crowd was served with a top-notch performance. The show hits midnight, when the McGee’s go all out one last time and bring the house down with a 13-minute rendition of fan favorite and finale “Puppet String”. One can feel the ground shake with the audience dancing and jumping to the electrifying tune. In all, this night proved once again that an Umphrey’s McGee show is one cannot miss act. So once again I ask, what can be said of Umphrey’s McGee that hasn’t previously been said? Probably nothing, but the feeling the boys infuse in their fan-base is everything.
